YouTube TV will soon introduce a “fully customizable multiview” experience, according to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan. In his annual letter published on Wednesday, Mohan revealed that the streaming television service plans to roll out the feature to allow users to curate their own screen layouts across sports, news, and entertainment. Alongside this update, Mohan highlighted that YouTube TV is launching upcoming genre-specific channel packages, which are designed to give subscribers more flexibility over content costs. The upcoming packages will allow viewers to choose specialized options focused on sports, news, family programming, or entertainment, tailoring their subscriptions to their interests and potentially saving on costs.

When YouTube TV first rolled out the multiview feature in 2023, it was designed specifically for sports broadcasts, allowing fans to watch multiple games at the same time. While the service later expanded the feature to include news and weather, viewers were restricted to preselected channel combinations. These preselected options featured specific channels such as CNN, MSNBC, HGTV, and Food Network, preventing users from choosing their own custom mixes. Under the upcoming update, viewers will finally be able to select up to three more live channels to add to their screen, allowing them to watch up to four channels simultaneously.

This expanded multiview capability is expected to appeal to families and larger households with diverse viewing preferences, as it allows different genres to be watched together on a single screen. However, YouTube TV has not shared pricing or launch dates for the upcoming genre-specific packages. While the platform prepares for the rollout, subscribers will have to wait for further details on how these packages will be priced and when they will officially become available.

Why it matters

This update shifts YouTube TV from a rigid, pre-selected viewing experience to a personalized one, potentially lowering costs for subscribers through targeted genre bundles.
