Wikimedia expands commercial data access for AI firms
The Wikimedia Foundation has signed new partnerships with several AI companies, allowing them to access Wikipedia data via its commercial Wikimedia Enterprise product.
The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia, has announced a series of new partnerships with several artificial intelligence companies as part of its 25th birthday celebration. These companies are now customers of Wikimedia Enterprise, the foundation’s commercial product designed for the large-scale reuse and distribution of Wikipedia content and other Wikimedia projects. While some partners like Ecosia, Pleias, and ProRata had been previously mentioned, the foundation publicly shared for the first time that it has formed partnerships with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity over the past year. New partners Nomic and Reef Media were also included in the announcement. This commercial enterprise product is designed to provide these technology companies with access to Wikimedia projects at a volume and speed that meets their data needs for AI models.
These commercial agreements build on a previous partnership that the organization formed with Google in 2022. The commercial enterprise product offers a sustainable revenue model for the nonprofit foundation at a time when much of its content is being used by AI models and other technology services to deliver factual answers to user queries. The scale of the platform’s reach is global: Wikipedia is currently ranked among the top 10 most-visited websites globally. Its vast repository contains 65 million articles written in 300 languages, which are viewed nearly 15 billion times per month.
The announcements were timed with a livestreamed birthday event on January 15. The celebration also featured a time capsule exploring the site’s history, with some narration provided by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. In discussing the relationship between human-generated content and artificial intelligence, Wikimedia Foundation CPO/CTO Selena Deckelmann highlighted the critical role of the platform’s community. “Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever,” Deckelmann stated. She added that with the continued help of volunteer editors, readers, and partners across the globe, the platform will remain a crucial hub for human-powered knowledge and online collaboration for the next 25 years and beyond.
Why it matters
These deals provide a sustainable revenue model for the Wikimedia Foundation while offering AI companies access to Wikipedia content at a volume and speed designed to meet their data needs. This commercial pipeline ensures the nonprofit can support its operations as tech companies increasingly rely on human-powered knowledge to feed their AI models.
