WhatsApp expands AI features to compete with external tools

WhatsApp is introducing AI-powered suggested replies to its Writing Help feature, an in-app tool used for drafting and editing messages. The Writing Help feature, which first launched last August, already helps users rephrase, proofread, or adjust the tone of their messages. Meta, the owner of WhatsApp, likely hopes the update will encourage users to compose their messages directly within the chat interface rather than relying on external tools like ChatGPT. The update, which Meta announced in a blog post on Thursday, represents an effort to embed conversational AI assistance directly into the core messaging experience, keeping users engaged within its own ecosystem. The company stated that this latest update is intended to help users get their messages right.

The new suggested replies are designed to generate text based on the context of ongoing conversations. By offering these automated drafts, Meta is attempting to streamline the writing process for users. However, the introduction of AI-generated messaging also highlights a tension between automated convenience and authentic communication, as some users may still prefer personal, unassisted conversations when messaging friends and family. This distinction is particularly relevant when comparing professional drafting to personal chats, where automated replies might feel less genuine.

Alongside the AI updates, WhatsApp is introducing several practical utility features aimed at improving account management and cross-platform flexibility. Notably, the platform now supports the option to move chat history between iOS and Android, as well as within the same operating system. This allows users to transition between different mobile devices without losing their conversation records. Additionally, users can now have two WhatsApp accounts logged in at the same time on iOS, a feature that brings the Apple version of the app to parity with its Android counterpart, where multi-account login was already supported. Meanwhile, the company asserted that user chats remain private even when utilizing the Writing Help features, ensuring that the integration of artificial intelligence does not compromise the security of user communications.
