Apple CEO Tim Cook to step down in September

Apple CEO Tim Cook will step down from his role in September, marking the end of his 15 years leading the technology company. Cook, who took over the position from Steve Jobs in 2011, will transition to the role of executive chairman. John Ternus has been named as the incoming CEO to succeed him.

The leadership transition highlights a shift from Cook’s operational focus to Ternus’s product-centric background. While some observers view Ternus’s appointment as a nostalgic return to a product-focused leadership style reminiscent of Steve Jobs, others emphasize the significance of the operational foundation Cook established. According to TechCrunch podcast host Kirsten Korosec, “But I think what people forget is that Tim Cook actually made another product, which was completely around operations.” This operations strategy became a core part of Apple’s business. Meanwhile, Apple’s experimental initiatives have seen mixed results; Project Titan, Apple’s special projects team and supposed car project, has petered out.

Ternus will inherit a business with financial resources including more than $45 billion in cash on hand at the end of 2025. The company’s services division and the App Store continue to generate revenue, even as critics point to stagnation in hardware designs like the iPhone or the niche positioning of the Vision Pro. However, Ternus faces immediate challenges. TechCrunch podcast host Sean O’Kane noted that while the start for Ternus is probably comfortable, he must navigate potential headwinds, raising concerns about the breaking apart of a global economy and the rise of artificial intelligence changing how business gets done. This transition occurs as software shifts like vibe-code, a term for AI-assisted coding, challenge traditional software marketplaces, though the App Store’s performance remains strong.

A key part of Cook’s legacy has been his role as a corporate diplomat, maintaining relationships to shield Apple’s supply chain. This includes managing relations with the US government. Following the announcement of the transition, former US President Donald Trump posted on his platform, Truth Social, claiming that Cook kisses his ass all the time. Ternus will need to establish his own geopolitical and operational strategies to maintain Apple’s stability.

Why it matters

The transition marks the end of a 15-year era defined by operational excellence, leaving the new leadership to navigate a shifting global economy and the integration of AI.
