Waymo nears $16 billion funding round at $110 billion valuation
Waymo is reportedly nearing a $16 billion funding round that would value the autonomous vehicle company at $110 billion, with Alphabet providing the majority of the capital.
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company, is reportedly nearing the finalization of a new $16 billion funding round, according to a report by the Financial Times. The upcoming transaction will value the robotaxi company at $110 billion. More than three-fourths of the total capital for this round will reportedly come from Alphabet, Waymo’s parent company and primary investor. Waymo was originally incubated as part of X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory.
According to the Financial Times, the funding round will bring in several new and existing backers. The investor breakdown includes:
- New investors: Dragoneer, Sequoia Capital, and DST Global are joining the company’s cap table.
- Existing investors: Andreessen Horowitz and Mubadala Capital, which is the asset management subsidiary of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, are also participating in the round.
This transaction follows Waymo’s previous funding round in 2024, when it raised a $5.6 billion Series C round that valued the company at $45 billion. The robotaxi operator has now reached more than $350 million in annual recurring revenue, according to the Financial Times.
The company is expanding its operations, including a recent launch in Miami. However, this growth has come with some challenges, including a number of robotaxis that stalled at traffic lights during a widespread San Francisco blackout.
When contacted, a company spokesperson stated: “While we don’t comment on private financial matters, our trajectory is clear: with over 20 million trips completed, we are focused on the safety-led operational excellence and technological leadership required to meet the vast demand for autonomous mobility.”
Why it matters
This massive capital injection underscores the high cost of scaling autonomous vehicle operations and Alphabet’s continued commitment to maintaining Waymo’s market leadership despite operational hurdles.
