Ron Conway to reduce activity following cancer diagnosis

On Friday, longtime venture capitalist Ron Conway announced that he was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. In a public statement, Conway shared that he will be stepping back from some of his usual activities to prioritize his medical treatments. Despite this shift, he plans to continue to support the startup founders backed by his firm. He explained that he will maintain a more focused and balanced schedule to manage his health while continuing to assist founders. Conway’s announcement indicates that while his personal schedule will change, his commitment to the firm’s portfolio companies remains active. “With a more focused and balanced schedule, I can prioritize treatments while helping SV Angel founders at inflection points like we always do!” said Conway, a venture capitalist.

Conway emphasized that operations at SV Angel, the venture capital firm he founded, will remain unchanged despite his personal health challenge. He explained that the firm’s operational continuity is secured, noting that his son, Topher Conway, has been responsible for making the firm’s investment decisions for the better part of the last decade. The firm’s leadership was further strengthened when his other son, Ronny Conway, joined SV Angel as a managing partner in 2024. According to Conway, his sons bring experience from nearly every major technology cycle in Silicon Valley. Under their leadership, the firm remains focused on partnering with founders who are building the future of artificial intelligence.

Conway is choosing not to disclose the specific type of cancer he has in order to avoid public speculation regarding his prognosis. Despite the diagnosis, he expressed that he remains optimistic. Conway is currently receiving medical care in San Francisco from a team of doctors at UCSF, the University of California, San Francisco. He noted that he is fortunate to have an amazing team of doctors supporting him during his treatment, adding that he never backs down from a fight.

Why it matters

As a longtime venture capitalist in Silicon Valley, Ron Conway’s transition highlights the succession planning and operational stability of his firm, SV Angel, during his personal health challenge. The continuity of the firm’s investment strategy under his sons’ leadership underscores the institutionalization of early-stage venture investing in the region.
