$TRUMP memecoin investors lose $3.8 billion

Nearly 1 million people have lost a total of $3.8 billion after purchasing the $TRUMP memecoin, according to an analysis by cryptocurrency analytics firm Nansen. The New York Times reported that Nansen’s analysis, which is based on transactions publicly visible on the blockchain, showed that 988,905 accounts had lost money on the memecoin as of the end of June. This figure represents around two out of three $TRUMP buyers.

The token has experienced a steep decline since its launch. On Sunday, the $TRUMP memecoin was trading at $1.69, representing a drop of nearly 98% from its high price of $75.35. Donald Trump announced the memecoin three days before his inauguration in 2025. Prior to launching this token, Trump had co-founded World Liberty Financial, a crypto startup co-founded by Donald Trump and his sons.

While retail buyers faced heavy losses, financial disclosures reveal that the president generated substantial personal revenue from the token. According to a financial disclosure, the president made $636 million from the $TRUMP memecoin. This personal payout represents a significant portion of the $1.4 billion that the president made in total from the crypto industry.

Meanwhile, regulatory oversight of the sector has shifted. The Securities and Exchange Commission—the SEC (the US financial regulatory agency)—has stated that it will not regulate memecoins as securities. Following these regulatory shifts, a White House spokesperson told The New York Times, “President Trump proudly made the United States the crypto capital of the world.”

Why it matters

The analysis highlights the stark contrast between the significant financial losses for nearly 1 million retail investors and the substantial personal earnings generated by the president from the crypto industry.
