TikTok adds Apple Music integration for full song playback
TikTok has partnered with Apple Music to allow users to play full songs directly within the app, with a worldwide rollout planned over the coming weeks.
TikTok announced on Wednesday a partnership with Apple Music that allows subscribers of the streaming service to play full songs directly within the social media platform. Under this integration, Apple Music subscribers who discover a track on their TikTok “For You” page—the platform’s algorithmic content feed—or on a Sound Detail Page can tap a new “Play Full Song” button. This action opens an in-app Apple Music player, allowing users to listen to the complete track without leaving the TikTok application. TikTok, which is widely recognized for driving music trends and viral songs, stated that the feature is designed to make it easier for users to transition from the moment of discovery to deeper listening.
The integration is built using MusicKit, Apple’s developer framework for music integration. By utilizing MusicKit, the full-length song playback technically occurs on Apple Music, ensuring that streams are tracked and paid within the streaming service’s ecosystem. Notably, this feature is exclusive to Apple Music. TikTok does not allow users to play full songs from other streaming services, including Spotify, meaning users of other platforms must still navigate away from the app to hear full tracks.
Alongside the playback integration, TikTok and Apple Music are introducing “Listening Party,” a new feature designed to let fans listen to songs from their favorite artists in real time. This feature allows fans to interact with each other and the artist during the listening session, creating a more social music experience. The new features are scheduled to launch worldwide over the coming weeks.
The partnership marks a strategic focus for TikTok on driving music discovery rather than competing directly in the streaming market. The company previously attempted to run its own standalone music streaming service before shutting it down. Since then, TikTok has focused on features that connect its platform to external streaming services. These include the “Add to Music App” feature, which lets users save discovered tracks to their preferred streaming service, and “Share to TikTok,” which allows direct sharing of tracks from Apple Music and Spotify. To support this ecosystem, TikTok also operates “TikTok for Artists,” a music insights platform launched last year to provide artists and labels with performance data and promotional tools.
Why it matters
This integration bridges the gap between viral discovery and consumption, ensuring that streams are monetized within the Apple Music ecosystem while keeping users inside the TikTok interface. By leveraging Apple’s MusicKit, the partnership allows TikTok to reinforce its role as a primary music discovery engine without needing to manage its own streaming infrastructure.
