Samsara debuts sticky Bluetooth label to combat global cargo theft
Samsara is launching a disposable, business-card-sized Bluetooth tracking label designed to combat global cargo theft by leveraging its existing fleet sensor network for real-time visibility.
On Wednesday, fleet management company Samsara announced a business-card-sized, disposable sticky tracking label designed to address the growing issue of global cargo theft. The shipping and logistics industries have historically struggled with cargo going dark between checkpoints. To illustrate the scale of the problem, the source describes a hypothetical scenario in late 2024 where a company president, such as Guy Fieri, discovers that 24,000 bottles of tequila have vanished. Samsara’s new Tracking Label aims to solve this vulnerability by leveraging its existing infrastructure of fleet sensors as a Bluetooth network, providing precise location data for shipments.
The hardware is designed to be small and unobtrusive. According to David Gal, Samsara’s vice president of connected equipment, previous tracking solutions like the wine cork-sized Asset Tag were often too bulky or expensive for one-way shipping. “Customers basically said: ‘We need something that’s real time, and we need something that can be small enough to mount on any piece of equipment’,” Gal said. The new Tracking Label arrives in a sleep mode that can last for up to nine months. Once activated, its zinc battery powers the Bluetooth radio for around 45 days before the label is disposed of.
The launch comes as other logistics giants attempt to solve real-time visibility. In April, UPS announced a plan to use RFID (radio-frequency identification) sensors to track packages. However, RFID technology typically requires packages to remain close to dedicated physical scanners to register their location. Samsara argues its approach is more effective because it utilizes the company’s pre-existing, constantly moving network of fleet cameras and sensors. Samsara has previously leveraged this network for other services; in May, the company announced Ground Intelligence, a suite of tools that uses AI to spot road hazards. Gal noted that the tracking network shifts the logistics paradigm. “It shifts the paradigm from reactive to proactive. If you know something’s delayed, you can get ahead of it,” he said.
Samsara expects the Tracking Label to be used primarily for critical shipments. Beyond managing delays, the company anticipates the hardware will directly impact logistics security. Gal expressed confidence in the device’s potential to intercept illicit activity, stating, “I have a feeling that we’ll bust some crime rings with this.”
