Non-developers are increasingly building their own apps for personal use due to rapid advancements in AI technology. These micro apps—sometimes called personal or fleeting apps—are intended to be used only by the creator or a select few, rather than for wide distribution. Instead of buying software or subscribing to existing platforms, individuals are using AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to build highly customized, temporary applications that solve immediate, hyper-specific problems.

While web-based applications are relatively straightforward to generate, mobile micro apps still aren’t as easy to build as web apps because of App Store requirements. This friction has created an opportunity for mobile vibe-coding startups—which enable building apps using natural language prompts with AI. Startups in this space have recently secured significant venture backing: Anything raised $11 million, while VibeCode raised a $9.4 million seed round. Legand L. Burge III, a professor of computer science at Howard University, noted that the phenomenon is similar to how social media trends appear and then fade away, but now it is the software itself.

Individuals are applying these tools to a wide range of personal scenarios. For example, Rebecca Yu took seven days to build Where2Eat, a dining app designed to help her and her friends select restaurants. Yu noted that she began hearing about individuals with no tech backgrounds successfully building their own applications once vibe-coding apps emerged. Following this initial success, Yu has six more ideas she wants to code.

Other creators are building tools for highly specific personal or health needs. Software engineer James Waugh built a custom logger for a friend who had heart palpitations so she could track her symptoms for her doctor. Waugh described it as a “Great example of a one-off personal software that helps you keep track of something important.” In another instance, Nick Simpson built an app to automatically scan and pay parking tickets because he was so bad at paying parking tickets under San Francisco’s tough parking availability. Simpson, a registered Apple developer, currently hosts his app in beta on TestFlight, Apple’s platform for beta testing apps.

Despite their utility, personal apps come with clear limitations. Building and sharing code with others can become somewhat expensive due to subscription costs. Additionally, these personal apps may contain bugs or security flaws.

Why it matters

The rise of AI-powered vibe coding is enabling non-technical users to create hyper-personalized, temporary software. According to Christina Melas-Kyriazi, a partner at Bain Capital Ventures, this shift will potentially fill the gap between simple spreadsheets and full-fledged products, changing how individuals and households manage their daily workflows.
