AI augmentation may be turning companies into burnout machines
New research suggests that AI augmentation in the workplace may lead to increased burnout and fatigue rather than a productivity revolution, as employees fill freed-up time with more work.
A new study published in the Harvard Business Review suggests that companies adopting artificial intelligence are at risk of becoming burnout machines. Researchers from UC Berkeley spent eight months conducting in-progress research inside a 200-person tech company to observe the effects of AI adoption. Through 40 in-depth interviews, the researchers analyzed how expectations, stress, and productivity shifted after employees integrated AI tools into their daily workflows.
The study found that workers at the 200-person tech company did not feel pressured by management to hit new targets. Instead, work bled into lunch breaks and evenings because AI made more work feel doable, expanding their tasks to fill the saved time. An engineer at the firm explained the dynamic: “You had thought that maybe, oh, because you could be more productive with AI, then you save some time, you can work less. But then really, you don’t work less. You just work the same amount or even more.” This experience is mirrored on the tech industry forum Hacker News, where a commenter reported that since their team adopted an AI-centric working style, expectations and stress have tripled, while actual productivity has only gone up by maybe 10%. The commenter noted that employees feel immense pressure to prove that the company’s investment in AI is worth it, forcing them to work longer hours.
These findings challenge the popular narrative of AI as a force multiplier that reduces workloads. Other studies support this skepticism. In a separate trial conducted last summer, experienced developers using AI tools took 19% longer on tasks, even though they believed they were 20% faster. Additionally, a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private non-profit research organization, found that productivity gains from AI adoption amounted to just 3% in time savings, with no significant impact on earnings or hours worked.
Ultimately, the research indicates that instead of liberating workers, AI integration in American work culture is driving “fatigue, burnout, and a growing sense that work is harder to step away from.” As organizational expectations for speed and responsiveness rise, the efficiency gains of AI are being absorbed by ever-expanding workloads.
