TechCrunch highlights top government and legal startups

Every year, the Startup Battlefield—the annual pitch contest hosted by technology publication TechCrunch at its annual Disrupt conference—draws thousands of applicants. From this pool, organizers select the top 200 contenders. While the top 20 of these startups compete on the main stage for the Startup Battlefield Cup and a $100,000 cash prize, the remaining 180 startups participate in their own pitch competitions. This year’s cohort features a distinct group of companies focused on public safety, disaster response, and legal technology.

The selected cohort highlights several notable startups addressing critical public sector and legal challenges:

  • JustiGuide: The startup connects immigrants with lawyers and tools, and won the policy and protection pitch stage at Disrupt.
  • Shothawk AI: Founded in 2023, the company creates devices to track and subdue active shooters, addressing the rising rate of gun crime happening in public places, such as schools and supermarkets.
  • Depth AI: The startup creates artificial intelligence for spatial computing and healthcare imaging, which can be used for diagnosing illness.
  • Ponderosa AI: The company uses drones to detect and control small fires. Fires can quickly become out of control and cause catastrophic damage.
  • Torch Systems: The startup monitors high-value assets for wildfire prevention. As climate change leads to more devastating wildfires, any innovation helping to make such catastrophic events less disastrous is always good.
  • Aparti: The startup specializes in artificial intelligence for legal intake forms.
  • Ascender: The company creates robots for humanitarian assistance and disaster response.
  • Bot Mediation: The startup uses artificial intelligence to settle legal disputes.
  • ILias AI: The startup works in scent tech.
  • Orchestra: The company manages public safety via camera networks.
  • Pytho AI: The startup focuses on planning processes for warfighters.

The selection of these companies for the Startup Battlefield 200 highlights a range of emerging technologies in public safety, disaster response, and legal tech. These startups represent the cohort of government and legal innovators showcased at the event, presenting solutions that range from drone-based fire detection to AI-driven legal intake and dispute resolution.
