Tesla has officially launched robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas, without a human safety driver in the front seat. The milestone represents a significant operational step forward for the automaker’s autonomous vehicle program. On Thursday, CEO Elon Musk announced the development on X, the social media platform, posting: “Just started Tesla Robotaxi drives in Austin with no safety monitor in the car. Congrats to the Tesla AI team!”

The launch follows a phased rollout in the Texas city. Tesla first introduced its robotaxis in Austin last June in a limited deployment that required a safety operator. Later, in December, the company began testing its robotaxis in Austin without a safety driver in the front seat—a phase that served as a precaution in case the vehicle needs a human to take over.

Unlike some of its competitors, Tesla is charging passengers for these driverless rides. However, the transition to a fully driverless model is gradual, and the entire fleet is not yet operating without supervision. According to Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s AI lead, the rollout will begin with a small number of unsupervised vehicles integrated into the larger robotaxi fleet that still uses safety monitors, with the proportion of driverless cars set to grow over time. Additionally, there appears to be a chase car following the driverless vehicles during operation. This commercial approach contrasts with rival autonomous vehicle companies Zoox and Waymo, both of which did not immediately charge passengers for driverless rides during their initial deployments.

Musk used the launch to pitch for new engineering talent, framing the operational milestone as a recruiting opportunity. He urged engineers interested in solving real-world artificial intelligence challenges to join the Tesla AI team, asserting that addressing these physical-world robotics challenges will likely lead to the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
