Rivian targets 20,000 to 25,000 R2 sales in 2026
Rivian expects to sell between 20,000 and 25,000 R2 SUVs in 2026, a critical launch that will test the company's ability to scale production rapidly.
Rivian is preparing for the launch of its R2 SUV, with the company projecting sales between 20,000 and 25,000 units in 2026. Production is scheduled to begin in June, leaving the automaker a six-month window to hit its target. Achieving even the lower end of this projection would represent a fast production ramp for a new electric vehicle in the U.S. market, outpacing comparable electric vehicles priced at or under $60,000.
Beyond Rivian, the broader mobility sector has seen financial activity:
- Wayve: The U.K. automated driving software startup raised $1.2 billion, with the potential to reach up to $1.5 billion if it unlocks a $300 million milestone-based investment. The round values the company at $8.6 billion.
- Einride: The Swedish startup secured an oversubscribed $113 million PIPE (private investment in public equity) ahead of its public debut, which is expected for the first half of 2026.
- Momenta: The Chinese autonomous vehicle developer filed confidentially for an initial public offering in Hong Kong and may seek to raise at least $1 billion, according to Bloomberg.
- Nominal: The software startup raised $80 million in a Series B extension at a $1 billion valuation.
- Toyota & Denso: Toyota offered $30 billion for supplier Toyota Industries. Meanwhile, Denso made a takeover proposal for Kyoto-based chip maker Rohm, as reported by the WSJ.
- Zeno: The African startup raised $25 million in a Series A round, consisting of a $20.5 million equity fundraise and a $4.5 million debt facility.
- BYD: The Chinese automaker unveiled a battery pack capable of charging from 10% to 70% in five minutes.
- Volkswagen: The automaker announced it has delivered 4 million all-electric vehicles since 2013.
- Holyvolt: The Swedish battery tech company acquired battery materials company Wildcat Discovery Technologies in a deal valued at $73 million.
- Harbinger: The company acquired autonomous-driving software company Phantom AI.
- Hyundai, Toyota, and Chery: These automakers potentially face impact from the U.S.-Israel war with Iran, as the Middle East accounts for a significant percentage of their deliveries, according to an analysis by Bernstein.
Safety and regulatory scrutiny also remain high. A Waymo robotaxi was recently reported blocking an ambulance as it responded to the scene of a mass shooting in Austin. Amid these ongoing safety concerns, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has scheduled a forum on autonomous vehicle safety for Tuesday.
Why it matters
Rivian is planning one of the fastest launches of a new all-electric car in the U.S. with its forthcoming R2 SUV, and the stakes couldn’t be any higher.
