Stripe announces $159 billion valuation, eyes PayPal deal
Stripe is reportedly considering an acquisition of PayPal Holdings while simultaneously announcing a new $159 billion valuation, marking a significant shift in the fintech landscape.
Stripe is reportedly considering a deal to buy some or all of PayPal Holdings, sources told Bloomberg. The discussions are currently in their very early stages, and the acquisition may not happen. The potential transaction would bring together two companies in the digital payments industry, though Stripe has declined to comment on the reports. Following the publication of the reports detailing Stripe’s interest, PayPal’s stock rose slightly.
The news of the potential acquisition arrived on the same day that Stripe released its annual letter, which provides updates on the state of its business. The primary announcement in the letter was that Stripe is making a tender offer—which is a public solicitation to all shareholders to purchase their shares—that values the company at $159 billion. This transaction allows current employees to sell their shares to external buyers. This new valuation represents a 74% increase from Stripe’s valuation last year, making it one of the industry’s most valuable private companies. The investors buying employee shares through this tender offer include venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and Thrive Capital. The annual letter also noted that Stripe will buy back some of its own stock.
The potential deal highlights a contrast in how the two companies are currently valued and structured. While Stripe continues to scale as a private entity, its co-founder and CEO, Patrick Collison, recently told CNBC that going public is not on his list of priorities. In contrast, PayPal Holdings—which includes PayPal and its services, as well as other companies like Venmo—is a publicly traded company. PayPal currently has a market cap, which is the total market value of a company’s outstanding shares, of around $40 billion. This public market valuation means that PayPal is valued at a fraction of Stripe’s private valuation.
Why it matters
This potential acquisition would represent a consolidation in the fintech sector, combining Stripe’s high-growth private infrastructure with PayPal’s established public market presence. If realized, the deal could reshape the competitive dynamics of digital payments.
