Sony to end physical PlayStation game disc production in 2028

Sony announced Wednesday that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. The decision marks a definitive transition toward an all-digital distribution model for the gaming platform. Under this new policy, games released before the January 2028 cutoff will continue to be available on physical discs. However, after that date, every new release will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store and other retailers. This shift represents a major change for players who have long relied on physical copies as a staple of gaming culture.

The shift is directly aligned with changing consumer purchasing habits. According to Sony’s financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025—the company’s financial reporting period—the vast majority of players now buy games digitally. The breakdown of full-game software sales on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 during that period shows:

  • Digital downloads: 85% of full-game software sales
  • Physical copies: 15% of full-game software sales

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the division of Sony making the announcement, stated that the transition is a response to these shifting dynamics. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the company said.

The decline of physical media has had a severe impact on traditional brick-and-mortar retail. GameStop, a video game retailer, has reportedly closed more than 1,300 stores over the past two fiscal years as consumers increasingly bypass physical storefronts. Alongside the phase-out of physical discs, Sony is also winding down its legacy digital infrastructure. The company is shutting down the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 in select markets later this year, which will be followed by global closures of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita stores next year. Once those stores close, players will not be able to purchase new digital content on those systems. Sony stated that previously purchased games and content will still be available to download for the foreseeable future.

Why it matters

Sony’s decision to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in 2028 marks a significant shift toward an all-digital future, reflecting current consumer trends where digital downloads dominate software sales.
