On Wednesday, SeatGeek announced a new integration with Spotify to offer ticket-buying directly within the music streaming platform. The feature is currently limited to venues where SeatGeek is the primary ticket seller—the official vendor authorized to sell tickets for a venue. Specifically, the integration covers SeatGeek’s 15 major U.S. venue partners. While SeatGeek is a major player in the secondary ticketing space (the market for reselling tickets), this specific partnership is exclusive to venues where it operates as the primary ticketing platform. This is not SeatGeek’s first integration with a major consumer application; the company previously partnered with Snapchat in 2018 to allow users to purchase tickets directly within the social media app.

The integration positions SeatGeek to compete more directly with established ticketing giants like Ticketmaster and AXS. The U.S. ticketing market remains highly consolidated; Ticketmaster is estimated to service 53 of the top 68 U.S. arenas. The difficulty of challenging Ticketmaster’s dominance is highlighted by past venue shifts: for instance, Barclays Center switched from Ticketmaster to SeatGeek in 2021, but reversed course less than a year later to return to Ticketmaster. Despite this competitive landscape, Spotify operates an open ecosystem for live events, working with more than 45 ticketing partners, including AXS, Eventbrite, DICE, and Bandsintown. Through these partnerships, Spotify has helped artists generate over $1 billion in ticket sales to date.

The partnership allows SeatGeek to tap into Spotify’s massive and growing audience. Spotify has previously shown interest in the ticketing space, having experimented with direct ticket sales in 2022. Now, it is leveraging its massive reach to connect fans with ticketing partners. Last week, during its latest earnings call, Spotify reported having more than 750 million monthly users and 290 million paid subscribers. For the current quarter, the company projects further growth:

  • Monthly active users are projected to rise to 759 million.
  • Paid subscribers are projected to reach 293 million.

Why it matters

Direct placement in the Spotify app allows SeatGeek to reach millions of active music fans as they discover upcoming events, increasing the likelihood of converting listeners into ticket buyers.
