Rivian factory sustains damage after tornado hit
Rivian’s Normal, Illinois factory sustained damage from a tornado, though no injuries occurred and the company expects to resume operations in the affected building this week.
The electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has confirmed that its primary factory in Normal, Illinois was directly hit by a tornado and sustained damage over the weekend. According to the company, nobody was injured during the storm, which had an EF-1 intensity rating. However, the facility itself suffered structural impact, as a large section of the roof came down inside the facility.
The storm hit a newer section of the plant known as Building 2, which is used for R2 production. The R2 is the company’s upcoming SUV model. While operations in Building 2 are currently paused, the company expects to resume them shortly. In an email sent to staff on Sunday night, CEO RJ Scaringe thanked employees on site who sought safe shelter and followed emergency management protocols when the alarms sounded. Scaringe noted that he was proud of how the team came together to support one another and lead the cleanup and repair efforts. Spokesperson Marina Hoffmann stated in an email, “Once we secure the impacted area, we anticipate resuming operations in Building 2 (specifically for R2) this week.”
It is unclear if the temporary shutdown will impact the R2 rollout timeline, which is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. The R2 is a critical vehicle for Rivian’s financial strategy. The company has spent five years investing in manufacturing cost reductions for its current R1 portfolio, but it continues to lose money each quarter. Rivian is banking on the R2 SUV to help it reach profitability and scale its manufacturing. The automaker has estimated that it will sell between 20,000 and 25,000 R2 units in the U.S. by the end of the year, as it seeks to compete with rival manufacturer Tesla.
Currently, R2 production is starting at the Normal, Illinois plant alongside the existing R1 vehicles. However, Rivian is also preparing to build a new factory outside Atlanta, Georgia. Production at the Georgia facility is expected to begin in 2028, where it will eventually manufacture both the R2 and the R3 hatchback, which the company surprise-revealed in March 2024.
Why it matters
The tornado damage creates immediate uncertainty for the R2 SUV production timeline, a vehicle critical to Rivian’s strategy to stop losing money and scale its manufacturing.
