Rivian plans to launch a companion app for the Apple Watch next week, expanding its software ecosystem to allow owners to manage basic vehicle functions directly from their wrist. The electric vehicle manufacturer announced the upcoming release on Thursday, stating that the launch is part of a broader update to its mobile application. The integration aims to enhance the user experience for its outdoorsy, tech-loving customer base.

The new watch app will allow users to select up to four quick controls based on which features they use the most. Through these customizable controls, owners can perform several basic tasks, including:

  • Locking and unlocking doors
  • Venting windows
  • Triggering the vehicle alarm

Additionally, users can adjust the digital crown—the physical dial on the side of the Apple Watch—to set a target state of charge or adjust the temperature inside the vehicle.

The level of functionality will vary depending on the generation of the vehicle. For Rivian’s first-generation R1T trucks and R1S SUVs, owners must manually open the app and tap the lock icon on the watch to lock or unlock the vehicle. In contrast, second-generation R1 vehicles will unlock automatically as the driver approaches the car, provided they have set up a digital key—a system that enables vehicle access via a phone or watch.

The watch integration follows a wider vehicle software update rolled out on Thursday. This update includes a “kneel mode,” a suspension setting that lowers the vehicle by one inch below its previous low setting to improve accessibility. The update also allows drivers to toggle between different drive modes without causing the driver assistance system to disengage, and introduces a cold weather indicator that adds a blue tint to the battery graphic on the digital screen to show energy used for warming the battery pack.

This software expansion highlights how Rivian is positioning its technology stack as a core product. Beyond consumer features, the company’s software capabilities are central to its business strategy, notably through its $5.8 billion technology joint venture with Volkswagen. Under this partnership, Volkswagen will invest in Rivian through 2027, contingent on reaching specific milestones, to use the joint venture’s software in future Volkswagen Group vehicles.

Why it matters

Rivian is doubling down on software as a core product differentiator, using wearable integration to deepen the user experience for its tech-focused customer base while continuing to build out its broader technology platform.
