Pinterest announced on Tuesday that it is launching “Promote a Pin,” a new feature designed to let users boost the reach of their content without needing to design complex ad campaigns. The company is rolling out the feature to users in the U.S. in the coming weeks, with a global expansion planned in the future. The tool is designed to allow users to boost the reach of their Pins directly, simplifying the process for both individual creators and businesses.

The company is positioning the tool to capitalize on its massive search volume and user base, aiming to convert high-intent searches into advertising revenue. Pinterest shared several key statistics regarding its platform’s reach:

  • The platform has 619 million active users.
  • Users drive more than 80 billion searches every month.
  • According to Pinterest, this search volume is higher than ChatGPT’s 75 billion monthly searches.
  • Pinterest claims that more than half of these searches are commercial in nature.

To target users who are likely to convert, the Promoted Pin feature utilizes the Taste Graph system, which is Pinterest’s AI-driven recommendation and targeting system. Additionally, Pinterest is testing a pre-built Performance+ Catalog Sales campaign, allowing merchants to market products directly through its integration partner Shopify or the Pinterest Ads manager.

The tool is intended to lower the barrier to entry for advertisers of all sizes. In a statement, Pinterest’s Chief Business Officer Lee Brown said, “From entrepreneurs to global brands, we’re making it easier for businesses of every size to reach the right audiences, connect with new customers, and grow on Pinterest. Promote a Pin is a significant step in our work to remove barriers and deliver simple, powerful tools that unlock greater opportunity and long-term growth.”

This launch follows a challenging period for Pinterest as it seeks to stabilize its financial performance. The company laid off 15% of its staff in January, following a disappointing Q4 2025 financial quarter. However, the company also received a reported $1 billion investment from Elliott, an activist investor firm.

Why it matters

Pinterest is attempting to monetize its massive search volume by lowering the barrier to entry for advertisers, a critical move as the company seeks to stabilize its financial performance following recent layoffs and activist investor pressure.
