OpenAI acquires Hiro and TBPN in talent-focused deals

OpenAI has completed two deals, acquiring the personal finance startup Hiro and TBPN, a business talk show and new media company. The TBPN acquisition and other announcements were made last week. According to podcast guest Sean O’Kane, both of these transactions seem to be, to a certain extent, acqui-hires—a term describing acquisitions made primarily to secure the target company’s talent rather than its products. The acquisition of Hiro, which only launched two years ago, appears to be a clear talent acquisition as the startup is folding its existing services. Meanwhile, the acquisition of TBPN involves a media company that reportedly will retain its editorial independence, though the deal has drawn skepticism regarding how that independence will be maintained under OpenAI’s corporate structure.

These two acquisitions highlight what O’Kane, a podcast guest, describes as “two big existential problems that OpenAI is trying to solve right now.” The first problem, addressed by the Hiro acquisition, is the need for product differentiation. O’Kane noted that OpenAI is looking for features beyond a standard chatbot that might convince users to pay more, especially as it seeks to build a sustainable business model. The second problem is public relations. By acquiring TBPN, OpenAI may be attempting to improve its public image, which has struggled recently. This public image pressure has intensified following a report by Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker a few weeks ago, leaving OpenAI in a position where it certainly is under more questions now than just a few weeks ago.

At the same time, OpenAI is facing pressure from Anthropic, which podcast host Anthony asserted is a direct competitor. Anthropic is gaining traction in the enterprise and coding sectors with tools like Claude Code. This competitive pressure feels like it is forcing OpenAI to refocus its efforts on making ChatGPT and its GPT models competitive in an enterprise context, particularly for programmers, as it seeks to match its rival’s progress in these key areas.

Why it matters

OpenAI’s acquisitions of Hiro and TBPN are viewed as acqui-hires intended to address existential challenges regarding product differentiation and public image, while the company simultaneously attempts to refocus on enterprise competition against rivals like Anthropic.
