OpenAI has disbanded its mission alignment team, an internal group of six or seven employees tasked with communicating the company’s mission to the public and its own staff. The news was first reported by Platformer, which noted that the team appears to have been formed in September of 2024. An OpenAI spokesperson described the disbanding as a routine reorganization and confirmed that all affected team members have been reassigned to other roles within the company. According to an official OpenAI spokesperson, the mission alignment project served as a support function to help employees and the public understand the company’s mission and the impact of artificial intelligence, adding that this work continues throughout the organization. The spokesperson added that while they could not specify where the six or seven employees were reassigned, they are engaged in similar work in their new roles.

Josh Achiam, the former head of the mission alignment team, has transitioned into a new role as OpenAI’s chief futurist. In a blog post published Wednesday, Achiam explained his new position, writing, “My goal is to support OpenAI’s mission — to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity — by studying how the world will change in response to AI, AGI, and beyond.” In this new capacity, Achiam noted that he will be collaborating with Jason Pruet, an OpenAI physicist. It remains unclear whether Achiam will have a new team to support his work as chief futurist, though his personal website and LinkedIn profile still reflected his previous title as head of mission alignment following the announcement.

The dissolution of the mission alignment team follows the previous closure of another internal group at OpenAI. In 2023, the company formed its superalignment team, which was an internal group focused on studying long-term existential threats posed by artificial intelligence. That team was subsequently disbanded in 2024. While both groups focused on different aspects of the company’s broader goals—with the mission alignment team focusing on communicating the company’s mission and the superalignment team focusing on long-term existential threats—their dissolutions mark a continuing shift in how OpenAI structures its internal safety and communication functions.

Why it matters

The dissolution of the mission alignment team, following the earlier closure of the superalignment group, highlights the ongoing structural shifts within OpenAI as it balances rapid commercial scaling with its stated mission.
