NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani launches recurring Twitch series
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has launched a recurring Twitch livestream series, "Talk with the People," to establish a direct line of communication with younger constituents.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially launched “Talk with the People,” a recurring livestream series on Twitch (a live streaming platform). The premiere of the series took place on Thursday, May 21, drawing over 10,000 viewers for the initial stream. The broadcast represents a direct effort by the 112th mayor of New York City to establish a direct line of communication with younger, digitally native generations. During the stream, Mamdani answered questions live from viewers through the Twitch chat (where “chat” is the term used to address viewers on the platform), creating a direct connection between a public official and an online audience.
Mamdani has framed the initiative as a modern digital evolution of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s historical fireside chats, the radio broadcasts Roosevelt used to speak directly to the American public in their homes. By moving to live streaming, Mamdani aims to bypass traditional media channels to reach voters where they spend their time online. In a statement to Polygon, the publication that exclusively revealed the launch, Mamdani explained the motivation behind the project: “By launching the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official, where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch, we’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long.”
This transition to live streaming aligns with Mamdani’s established political brand, which has heavily relied on social media to explain complex policy issues such as housing and transit. The mayor has previously used casual videos to explain policy, including his push for free public transit and plans to speed up bus routes by six minutes. Mamdani has built a substantial digital presence, amassing over 15 million followers across Instagram, TikTok, and X. During the premiere, the influencer Moose appeared on the stream to help the mayor navigate the platform’s culture. By leveraging this existing digital infrastructure, the mayor is attempting to normalize political discourse on platforms like Twitch. This approach follows previous political uses of the platform, such as streams by politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and broadcasts by political streamers like Hasan Piker.
Why it matters
The launch of a recurring cross-platform stream by an elected official represents a shift in how politicians communicate with younger generations. By adopting interactive streaming platforms, public officials are bypassing traditional media to establish direct, unmediated channels of communication, mirroring the historical role of radio broadcasts like Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats.
