In a livestreamed product announcement on Wednesday, productivity software maker Notion introduced a new developer platform. The platform extends the capabilities of its custom AI agents and connects with external agents.

This release builds on the adoption of Notion’s Custom Agents, which first launched in February. Since then, the company says its customers have built over 1 million agents. To expand these capabilities, Notion will allow teams to deploy their own custom code via Workers, which is the company’s cloud-based environment for running custom code. To encourage developer experimentation, Notion is making Workers free through August.

With Workers, developers can write logic and deploy it to a secure sandbox, enabling them to trigger actions using webhooks—which are automated signals that kick off actions when something happens in another app. The platform also supports database synchronization, which can pull in data from any database with an API to keep information current. This allows developers to build tools using Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging standard that lets AI tools connect to external data and services. Developers and agents interact with the platform via the Notion CLI, a command-line tool for developers that is available on all of the company’s plans.

Notion co-founder and CEO Ivan Zhao acknowledged the company’s historical positioning. “It’s true that, historically, Notion hasn’t been the most developer-focused platform. But things are changing,” Zhao said. He noted that the new platform allows users to use their Notion databases as a canvas to power both their workflows and their agents.

The platform also enables users to interact directly with external partner agents, chat with them, assign them work, and track progress. At launch, the supported partner agents include:

  • Claude Code
  • Cursor
  • Codex
  • Decagon

Notion plans to add more partner agents in the future. There is also an External Agent API for teams that want to connect their own internal agents with Notion, such as those built specifically for their company’s needs. By integrating these external tools alongside its internal Custom Agents, custom code, and live data, the platform positions Notion to compete directly with workflow automation platforms.

Why it matters

The Developer Platform represents a shift in strategy for Notion as it becomes more of a programmable platform than just an application. By tying together agents, custom code, and live data in one place, the company is positioning its workspace to compete with workflow automation platforms as core business infrastructure.
