Nothing brings system-level AI dictation to its phones
Nothing has launched Essential Voice, an AI-powered dictation tool offering system-level integration and support for over 100 languages across its smartphone lineup.
On Thursday, hardware company Nothing launched Essential Voice, a new AI-powered dictation tool. Unlike existing third-party dictation applications, Essential Voice distinguishes itself by offering system-level integration. This means the software is built directly into the operating system rather than functioning as a standalone app. The tool is designed to work across any application on the device, transcribing spoken words into formatted text while automatically removing filler words.
The feature supports over 100 languages at launch. To access the tool, users can either press the physical Essential key on supported devices or activate it directly from the keyboard. Nothing is rolling out the feature across its device lineup on a staggered schedule:
- Phone (3): The feature is currently available on this device.
- Phone (4a) Pro: Rollout is planned for later this month.
- Phone (4a): Support is scheduled to arrive next month.
With this launch, Nothing enters a crowded consumer app market currently populated by independent dictation tools such as Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Willow, and Monologue. Earlier this week, Superwhisper released a feature for iPhone users that allows them to map the device’s action key to the app’s keyboard for dictation. However, Nothing is one of the first companies to offer a system-level integration for dictation. As competitors like Google release offline dictation apps, the broader mobile industry might see more companies release similar native, system-level tools in the future.
Why it matters
Nothing is positioning Essential Voice as a key differentiator by offering system-level integration, a move that challenges existing third-party dictation apps and signals a broader industry shift toward native AI tools.
