Few venture firms have invested as aggressively in artificial intelligence as Sequoia Capital, and the firm shows no signs of slowing down. According to a report by Bloomberg, Sequoia has raised roughly $7 billion for a new fund. The venture capital firm declined to comment on the fundraise when contacted. This massive capital injection represents the first major fundraise for the firm under its recently established leadership structure, signaling its ongoing commitment to backing technology companies at scale.

The firm plans to direct this capital toward its expansion strategy, which serves as Sequoia’s late-stage investing arm. This division focuses its investment activity on growth-stage companies operating in the U.S. and Europe. The scale of the new fund represents a significant increase in capital compared to its predecessor; at roughly $7 billion, the new vehicle is nearly double the size of Sequoia’s last comparable fund, a $3.4 billion vehicle raised in 2022. This growth in fund size reflects the changing dynamics of late-stage investing in the AI era, where companies can scale at a speed and cost that require backing venture firms to keep pace with their capital demands.

The capital allocation highlights Sequoia’s deep focus on artificial intelligence, spanning from the companies building foundational technology to the startups putting it to work. The firm has backed two major players in the AI sector: OpenAI and Anthropic. Both of these portfolio companies are reportedly eyeing public listings in 2026, a development that could represent a significant financial milestone and a major payday for the venture firm.

However, Sequoia is not focusing solely on foundational AI heavyweights. The firm is also actively backing startups that are applying artificial intelligence to specific industries and technical challenges. Among these investments are Physical Intelligence, a robotics startup based in the Bay Area, and Factory, a startup that builds AI agents for enterprise engineering teams. These investments demonstrate the firm’s strategy of backing both the underlying technology and the practical applications of AI.

The fundraise is also the first major capital raise under Sequoia’s new leadership. Alfred Lin and Pat Grady now serve as co-stewards—the primary leadership roles at the 54-year-old firm.

Why it matters

This fundraise, the first under new co-stewards Alfred Lin and Pat Grady, underscores Sequoia’s strategy to aggressively back AI companies across the full spectrum, from foundational giants to specialized startups.
