Microsoft has confirmed it will officially shut down its Outlook Lite application on May 26, ending service for users of the lightweight email client. The company confirmed the shutdown date to TechCrunch on Monday, marking a definitive end to the application’s lifecycle. The news of the upcoming shutdown was first reported by Neowin. The application had already been scheduled for retirement, with Microsoft announcing last year that the app would be removed from the Google Play Store in October 2025. Now, the company has confirmed that the application will lose all functionality for its existing users next month.

Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was developed as a lightweight version of the regular Outlook application. It was designed specifically for Android phones with limited storage and for users living in regions with slower internet connections. The app allowed users to access essential email and calendar functions without the heavy storage and data demands of the standard application. By terminating the service on May 26, Microsoft is ending this specialized offering and requiring its user base to migrate to its main mobile email platform, regardless of their device constraints or network speeds.

To maintain access to their email, calendar, and attachments, Microsoft is directing current Outlook Lite users to download and transition to the standard Outlook Mobile application. Users will be directed to the Google Play Store to download the standard Outlook app. Once downloaded, users can access their existing email, calendar items, and attachments by signing into the standard Outlook Mobile application. On an Outlook Lite support page, Microsoft recommends that users transition, stating: “To continue enjoying a secure and feature-rich email experience, we recommend switching to Outlook Mobile,”. This recommendation serves as the official guidance for users who must now navigate the transition to the standard application.

Why it matters

Microsoft is consolidating its mobile email strategy by retiring the lightweight Outlook Lite app, requiring users on low-end devices or slower networks to transition to the standard Outlook Mobile experience.
