On Wednesday, First Lady Melania Trump hosted an event at the White House featuring a humanoid robot developed by the robotics firm Figure AI. The event served as the launch of her Fostering the Future Together global summit, which invited international leaders from around the world to discuss how to empower children through educational technology, including AI. During the presentation, the robot delivered a brief speech. “I am grateful to be part of this historic movement to empower children with technology and education,” said the humanoid robot, a robot developed by robotics firm Figure AI. Following the event, Figure AI expressed that it was honored to be invited to the White House by the First Lady.

During her remarks, Trump introduced the concept of a humanoid educator named Plato. She asked attendees to imagine a future where a humanoid robot would act as an educator for children, providing instantaneous home access to classical studies such as literature, science, art, philosophy, mathematics, and history. Trump asserted that this personalized, adaptive experience would be always patient and always available, helping children develop deeper critical thinking and independent reasoning abilities. At the same time as this event, the Trump administration announced the establishment of a separate tech council composed of Silicon Valley executives, highlighting the role the administration believes the private sector should play in American education.

This push toward automation aligns with the administration’s broader support for AI-driven educational models. The administration has actively promoted experiments like the Alpha School, a private school network that uses AI to teach children. Secretary of Education Linda E. McMahon, who is in the midst of abolishing the Department of Education, recently visited an Alpha School campus to praise the model. The administration stated that the Alpha School is reimagining K-12 education by equipping students with practical AI skills and preparing them for a rapidly evolving technology-driven workforce. Trump also recognized the participation of American technology companies, framing their engagement as a reflection of the private sector’s role in supporting educational innovation.

Why it matters

The event highlights the Trump administration’s strategy to integrate AI and robotics into education. This signals a potential shift toward automating learning and replacing traditional human educators with technology-driven alternatives.
