Mave Health launches $495 neuromodulation headset
Mave Health has launched a $495 non-medical neuromodulation headset, positioning the device as a lifestyle tool for stress and focus without requiring FDA clearance.
San Francisco-based startup Mave Health is launching a $495 neuromodulation headset designed to improve attention and mood, regulate stress, and measure mental health. To bypass regulatory hurdles, the company is positioning the wearable as a non-medical device that does not require clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Founded in 2023, the company is targeting a market of startups addressing issues like depression, period pain, PMS, anxiety, and insomnia. Founder Dhawal Jain started the company after his flatmate’s fiancée committed suicide, which led him to question the lack of tangible ways to measure progress for people experiencing depression. The company plans to ship its first batch of headsets to customers in the U.S. and India in April 2026.
The headset, which weighs roughly 100 grams, employs transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)—a non-invasive technique that delivers a low 1-2 mA current to stimulate the brain. Mave Health recommends daily sessions of 20 minutes and provides an accompanying app to track mood, focus, and stress. While the company has not performed clinical trials, it ran a private beta in 2024 and 2025 with more than 500 users. The internal study yielded the following self-reported results:
- Eight in 10 users reported a 60% increase in productivity.
- 75% of its private beta users reported a reduction in stress from their baseline within two months of usage.
Additionally, Mave Health has conducted four observational studies involving 200 participants, which are currently under academic review.
The device’s transition from clinical settings to consumer lifestyle use has drawn mixed reactions from medical experts. Dr. Himanshu Nirvan, a Delhi-based psychiatrist who consulted for Mave Health, reported that tDCS-based devices are considered a proven way to address mental health-related issues, noting the portability of the device allows users to charge it at home and travel with it. However, Leigh Elkins Charvet, a clinical neuropsychologist and Professor of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, warned that the use of tDCS for broad lifestyle enhancement in healthy individuals has not been studied widely. “One challenge is that consumers may use the device without clinical screening or clear guidance about whether it is appropriate for their symptoms,” Charvet said.
To support its commercial launch, Mave Health recently raised $2.1 million in a seed funding round led by Blume Ventures. The round also saw participation from individual investors, including Tesla Autopilot AI lead Dhaval Shroff. This latest round brings the startup’s total funding to date to just under $3 million. Jain founded the company alongside college batch mates Jai Sharma, who serves as CMO, and Aman Kumar, the CTO.
