Ryan Roslansky stepped down as the Chief Executive Officer of LinkedIn on Wednesday, concluding a six-year period leading the world’s largest professional network. Dan Shapero, who previously served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, has assumed the chief executive role immediately. The transition marks a major leadership change at the platform, which has operated as a subsidiary of Microsoft since its acquisition in 2016.

Roslansky’s history with LinkedIn spans more than a decade. He first joined the company in 2009, arriving as one of the first hires made by Jeff Weiner, who served as the former Chief Executive Officer of LinkedIn. Before taking the top job in June 2020, Roslansky spent more than ten years working through nearly every corner of the business, gaining deep operational experience that prepared him to lead the company through a period of pandemic-era labor market chaos.

Under Roslansky’s leadership, LinkedIn underwent a major financial and operational expansion. The scale of this growth is reflected in the platform’s core metrics:

  • User Membership: The total number of members on the platform grew from 700 million members at the start of Roslansky’s tenure to 1.3 billion members.
  • Annual Revenue: The company’s annual revenue increased from roughly $8 billion to $19 billion.

This financial performance was closely tied to a broader strategic transformation that Roslansky accelerated during his tenure. Under his direction, the platform transitioned from its original function as a digital job board into a highly active, social-focused network. This shift encouraged users, including corporate executives, to share personal essays, professional advice, and video updates directly on the platform, driving higher daily engagement and interaction among its members.

Following the transition, Roslansky will remain with the parent company. He continues to hold his role as an Executive Vice President at Microsoft, which acquired LinkedIn in 2016. Under the ongoing corporate structure, Shapero, who already reported to Roslansky, will continue to report to him, maintaining continuity in the platform’s executive reporting lines. Roslansky made clear on LinkedIn that he is staying on in this role.

Why it matters

Roslansky’s tenure transformed LinkedIn from a job board into a social network, driving significant growth in both membership and revenue over the last six years. This leadership transition ensures continuity as the platform seeks to maintain its position as the world’s largest professional network under Shapero’s direction.
