Shanghai Futures Exchange plans AI token derivatives market
The Shanghai Futures Exchange is designing a derivatives market for AI tokens, joining global exchanges like CME and ICE in treating compute as a tradable commodity.
The Shanghai Futures Exchange is designing a derivatives market for artificial intelligence tokens. In finance, derivatives are contracts whose value is based on an underlying asset. According to a report by Reuters, this move signals a shift where compute—the computational power used for AI processing—is treated as a global commodity. This development aligns with broader industry trends in which derivatives exchanges are exploring similar products. Specifically, CME Group and the Intercontinental Exchange, which owns the New York Stock Exchange, are working on launching futures contracts for renting graphics processing units (GPUs). According to the Intercontinental Exchange and CME, the market for compute is increasingly resembling a global commodity market rather than a traditional cloud market.
While GPU rental markets are maturing, the Shanghai Futures Exchange is focusing its efforts on AI tokens. These tokens are the building blocks of AI models and are increasingly used to price enterprise AI services. For example, OpenAI charges $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens to use its services. Cloud providers are also adopting this model, with Amazon offering per-token charging through its Bedrock system. The Shanghai exchange’s proposed derivative product would be tied directly to how these AI companies price their services.
The underlying market for compute is becoming more transparent as data providers track pricing fluctuations. AI Mining Co. tracks daily GPU rental pricing across marketplaces and cloud providers. According to their data, there are significant price fluctuations for Nvidia H100 and H200 GPUs:
- Median prices for Nvidia H100 GPUs ranged from $1.40 to $4.27 per hour.
- Average prices for H200 GPUs were between $2.34 and $5 per hour.
- Over the past seven days, average H100 prices ranged from $2.79 to $3.33.
Why it matters
By targeting AI tokens, the Shanghai exchange’s derivative product would be tied to how AI companies price their services. This would give businesses, investors, and data center operators a practical way to hedge against the fluctuating cost of compute.
