Instagram lets creators swap the music on published posts
Instagram now lets users swap out the music on already-published feed posts and carousels without losing existing likes, comments, shares, or reach, the Meta-owned company announced Tuesday.
Until now, changing the music on an Instagram post meant deleting it and re-uploading it from scratch, which reset its engagement. The newly launched “Replace Audio” tool removes that trade-off: creators can update a post’s soundtrack at any time while keeping its existing likes, comments, shares, and reach intact. Instagram says the feature is another step in giving creators more creative control over their content.
The company points to two common reasons people might want to swap a track: keeping a post aligned with a current trend, or simply refreshing an older post to match evolving music tastes. To use it, a creator navigates to the post they want to change, taps the two-line menu in the top-right corner, scrolls to “Edit,” and selects the option to swap the audio.
The addition comes after Instagram has drawn criticism in recent years for shipping features many users never asked for. Last week, the company killed a tool that let people modify photos from public Instagram accounts using AI, saying the feature “missed the mark.” In May, Instagram released “Instants,” a format meant to let users share real-life moments as they happened; many users didn’t understand how it worked and ended up accidentally sending images to everyone on their Friends list, prompting widespread frustration online.
Against that backdrop, a narrower, opt-in editing tool like Replace Audio is a comparatively low-risk addition — it changes something creators already control rather than introducing a new sharing behavior.
Why it matters
Letting creators edit a post’s soundtrack without resetting its engagement removes a real cost that was forcing people to choose between an outdated audio track and their post’s performance — a small but concrete usability fix after a string of features users didn’t want.
