Humans&, an artificial intelligence startup that is only three months old, has secured $480 million in seed funding. According to a report by The New York Times, this initial investment round places the company’s valuation at $4.48 billion. The startup was established by a team of former researchers from several AI companies, including Anthropic, xAI, and Google. The founders of the company include Andi Peng, a former researcher at Anthropic; Eric Zelikman and Yuchen He, both of whom are former researchers at xAI; and Georges Harik, an early employee at Google.

The company, which currently has 20-odd employees, plans to use the capital to develop software designed to help people collaborate with one another. Investors participating in the seed round include the chipmaker Nvidia, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and venture capital firms SV Angel, GV, and Emerson Collective. Humans& stated that its goal is to build artificial intelligence that serves “as a deeper connective tissue that strengthens organizations and communities.” To achieve this, the startup hopes to rethink how models are trained at scale and how people interact with AI. Its plans include using existing techniques to train AI in new ways, such as programming chatbots to request and store information from users, while focusing on innovations in long-horizon and multi-agent reinforcement learning, memory, and user understanding.

The massive seed round for Humans& is part of a broader trend of investors directing large sums of capital toward early-stage artificial intelligence startups. Several other companies have recently raised substantial early-stage rounds:

  • Thinking Machines Lab: The startup raised $2 billion in seed funding last July at a $12 billion valuation, which represents the largest seed round in history for now.
  • Unconventional AI: The company secured $475 million in seed funding in December at a valuation of $4.5 billion.
  • Lila Sciences: The firm raised $200 million in seed funding last March.
  • LMArena: The benchmarking platform raised $100 million in seed funding last May at a $600 million valuation. Earlier this month, the company raised an additional $150 million in a Series A funding round, bringing its post-money valuation to $1.7 billion.

Why it matters

The massive seed round for this three-month-old company highlights a continuing trend of investors aggressively backing startups founded by former employees of major AI labs.
