Google Play adds cross-platform gaming and AI-powered assistance
Google announced new Google Play gaming features at GDC 2026, including cross-platform "buy once, play anywhere" pricing, game trials, and AI-powered assistance.
On Wednesday, Google announced a series of gaming-focused updates to Google Play at GDC 2026, the Game Developers Conference. The company is expanding its Google Play catalog to include paid and PC indie games. To support this expansion, Google is introducing a new pricing model called “Buy once, play anywhere.” This pricing structure provides both the mobile and PC versions of a game with a single purchase.
Additionally, Google is launching game trials for select paid games. This feature is designed to let players try games before buying them. According to Google, these game trials are rolling out soon to select paid games on mobile. If a player decides to purchase the game after the trial, they can continue playing from where they left off.
The updates also introduce new community and AI features to the platform:
- Community Posts: This feature allows users to ask and answer game-related questions directly within Google Play. It is currently available in English for select popular games.
- Play Games Sidekick: Google is bringing this AI-powered in-game overlay to select paid games. The overlay provides real-time gaming assistance and is driven by Gemini Live, Google’s AI assistant technology.
These updates arrive six months after Google announced a redesigned Play Games experience. The previous redesign focused on centralizing stats, achievement tracking, rewards, and community features. The new updates continue this trajectory, signaling Google’s ongoing effort to centralize the gaming experience across mobile and PC platforms. By allowing players to try games before buying, play across mobile and PC, sync their progress, and connect with the gaming community in one place, Google is transforming Google Play into an enhanced gaming hub.
Why it matters
Google is positioning the Play Store as a comprehensive gaming ecosystem that bridges mobile and PC, aiming to centralize discovery, purchasing, and community interaction.
