On Thursday, Google announced that it is adding Nano Banana-powered image generation to Personal Intelligence, a feature within its Gemini artificial intelligence platform. This integration allows the AI to generate images using personalized context derived from a user’s existing Google account connections. Instead of requiring users to explicitly write out their personal preferences, likes, or interests within a prompt, Gemini can automatically reference connected data sources. Specifically, the feature draws information from:

  • Gmail
  • Google Photos

By linking these accounts, Gemini can generate highly personalized visuals from simple commands. For example, rather than typing a detailed prompt such as “Generate an image of my dream home, my interests are tennis and music,” a user can simply enter “Design my dream home.” The Nano Banana-powered connection can also interpret labels within Google Photos to understand group descriptions, such as “Family.” This allows users to generate images with prompts like “Generate an image of my family and me doing our favorite activity,” with the AI automatically identifying the correct individuals and interests from the user’s photo library.

However, Google noted that just like other account connections, Gemini might get the context wrong during the image generation process. To mitigate this, the company has included several user-control features. Users can click a “sources” button to view exactly how Gemini derived the context for a generated image. If the AI makes an error, users can provide direct feedback to correct it. Additionally, users can manually upload reference photos to guide the image generation by clicking a plus icon within the interface.

The new image-generation capability is scheduled to roll out to Gemini Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. within the coming days. Google plans to bring the feature to Gemini in Chrome desktop and to other users soon. This update follows the initial launch of the Personal Intelligence feature earlier this year, which Google made available to all U.S. users in March. Earlier this week, the company expanded the feature to more users in countries including India and Japan.

Why it matters

This update shifts AI image generation from generic prompts to personalized outputs by leveraging a user’s existing digital footprint, though it introduces new challenges regarding context accuracy.
