SpaceX files for million-satellite data center network
SpaceX has filed plans for a million-satellite data center network, following a formal merger with xAI to target orbital AI infrastructure by 2028.
SpaceX has formally merged with artificial intelligence venture xAI and filed plans with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the US telecommunications regulator, for a million-satellite data center network. The merger went forward on Monday, drawing together the space and AI companies. On Wednesday, the FCC accepted the filing and set a schedule seeking public comment. The regulatory step is typically a routine matter, but it signals a significant shift in infrastructure strategy as the newly combined entity looks to establish networks of computers operating in space.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and xAI, argues that orbital data centers are economically superior to ground-based alternatives due to solar power efficiency. During an appearance on the “Cheeky Pint” podcast hosted by John Collison, which also featured guest Dwarkesh Patel, Musk laid out the case for moving AI computing power into space. “Any given solar panel is going to give you about five times more power in space than on the ground, so it’s actually much cheaper to do in space,” Musk said. While solar panels produce more power in space than on the ground, critics note that power is not the only operational cost of running a data center, and solar panels are not the only way to generate power.
The proposal is moving forward under FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, who has been characterized as eager to help Trump’s friends and punish his enemies. Musk is targeting 2028 as a tipping point year for orbital data centers, predicting that in 36 months, but probably closer to 30 months, space will become the most economically compelling location for AI. He also predicted that in five years, the conglomerate will launch and operate more AI in space annually than the cumulative total on Earth. For context, by 2030, global data center capacity is estimated to reach 200 GW (gigawatts), representing roughly a trillion dollars of ground-based infrastructure. With the SpaceX-xAI conglomerate expected to hold an IPO in just a few months, orbital compute is poised to become a central focus for the company.
