ElevenLabs launches ElevenMusic app to compete in AI audio
ElevenLabs has launched ElevenMusic, an iOS app for AI-powered music generation, as the company seeks to diversify its offerings and protect against AI audio model commoditization.
Voice AI company ElevenLabs released an iOS app called ElevenMusic on April 1. The application allows users to generate and discover AI-created music, positioning the company to compete directly with established AI music generation platforms Suno and Udio. The launch represents a strategic expansion for ElevenLabs beyond its existing consumer tools, which include its voice generator and the ElevenReader app. By moving into music, the company aims to protect itself from the eventual commoditization of AI audio models—the process by which goods or services become indistinguishable from those of rivals.
The ElevenMusic app is currently free to use, allowing users to generate up to seven songs per day using natural language prompts. Within the app, users can adjust song length, toggle lyrics, and select writing styles, as well as discover and remix tracks created by other users. The interface mirrors traditional music streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, featuring live stations, pre-created albums, daily mixes categorized by mood, top charts, and trending sections.
For users seeking higher limits, ElevenLabs offers a Pro tier subscription. The Pro tier includes:
- Pricing of $9.99 per month or $95.90 per year
- The ability to generate up to 500 tracks every month
- Storage space of over 500 GB
- Access to all styles and moods
This product expansion follows a significant capital injection. In February, ElevenLabs raised a $500 million Series C round at an $11 billion valuation. The company has been steadily building out its creative capabilities since last August, when it released its first music-generation model. Earlier this year, the company also partnered with music producers to release an album created with the help of AI. More recently, the startup released a creative tool designed to handle ad generation, voice-overs, translation, image generation, video making, voice cloning, sound creation, and other tasks.
To drive adoption of the new music vertical, ElevenLabs is currently hiring for a consumer marketing role. The company, which previously established a program allowing authors to earn royalties for distributing books on ElevenReader, could offer royalty or other incentives for users to create more music on its platform.
Why it matters
ElevenLabs is attempting to transition from a specialized model provider into a broader consumer platform. The company views tools that generate music and other creative mediums as essential to sustaining growth and defending its market position against the eventual commoditization of underlying AI audio models.
