Golden Child launches with $37 million for pet food innovation
Golden Child, a new pet food startup backed by Atomic and Redpoint, has raised $37 million to launch its fresh meal system and shelf-stable liquid topper.
Golden Child, a U.S.-based pet food startup, announced today that it is emerging from stealth with $37 million in total funding. The company is launching a fresh frozen meal system alongside a shelf-stable liquid topper called a drizzle. The funding consists of a seed round and a Series A led by Redpoint Ventures, with participation from startup studio Atomic and investor A*.
The startup was co-founded by Hilary Coles and Quentin Lacornerie, both alumni of the telehealth company Hims & Hers. Founded in 2016, Hims & Hers now has a market cap of nearly $7 billion. To validate the market, Golden Child utilized “painted door tests”—Atomic’s methodology of running lightweight experiments to test consumer behavior. Atomic has seen varied outcomes with this approach: while Hims & Hers is publicly traded, OpenStore, an e-commerce roll-up co-founded in 2021 that raised more than $150 million in venture funding, slashed its valuation by 95% last year. Based on Atomic’s tests and an analysis of 11,000 reviews of existing fresh dog food products, the co-founders argue that the pet food industry has not innovated in about 12 years. Lacornerie noted that wellness has eclipsed Big Pharma by 4x in market cap, suggesting pet owners want similar rigor for their dogs.
The analysis of existing fresh dog food reviews revealed persistent consumer complaints, specifically regarding convenience and “dogs getting sick.” To address these issues, Golden Child employs 12 people, including a classically trained chef and Megan Sprinkle, who is one of roughly 80 board-certified veterinary nutritionists in the U.S. The company’s products are manufactured in the U.S. using human-grade supply chains and a “protein block” method to deliver chicken and beef with an enhanced amino acid profile.
While the company is launching with both products, the drizzle represents a more novel format. When asked about focusing solely on that product, Hilary Coles, co-founder of Golden Child, stated, “Like all entrepreneurs, we have a lot of opportunities to build out worlds. This is just the first inning.”
Key details of the launch and funding include:
- Total funding: $37 million raised across a seed round and Series A.
- The drizzle: A shelf-stable liquid topper retailing at $19.95 per bottle.
- The meal system: A fresh frozen system starting at $3 per day, sold primarily on subscription.
Why it matters
Golden Child is testing whether the direct-to-consumer playbook used by Hims & Hers can be successfully applied to the pet food market using Atomic’s rigorous experimentation methodology. The launch represents a high-stakes bet on whether premium pet wellness can command venture-scale margins.
