Discord launches Nitro Rewards for premium subscribers
Discord has launched Nitro Rewards, offering premium subscribers access to Xbox Game Pass and hardware discounts, as the company seeks to improve subscriber retention.
On Monday, Discord unveiled Nitro Rewards, a new perk program designed to provide its Nitro subscribers with access to special offers from other gaming and lifestyle brands at no additional cost. The program is explicitly excluded from the lower-cost Nitro Basic tier, which costs $2.99 per month, and is only available to subscribers of the Nitro tier, which costs $9.99 per month.
At launch, the Nitro Rewards program includes the following specific perks:
- Access to the base tier of Xbox Game Pass, a partner service providing access to more than 50 games and including 10 hours of cloud gaming.
- Discounts of between 15% and 30% on a rotating selection of gaming hardware from partner brands Logitech G, SteelSeries, and KontrolFreek.
The Nitro subscription currently provides upgrades to the Discord experience, such as profile customization options, HD streaming, and the ability to upload files of up to 500 MB. Because the platform remains free to use without paying, maintaining subscriber growth and retention is a key focus for the company. “Nitro is the biggest contributor to Discord revenue, and it’s been growing healthily year on year,” said Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord’s co-founder and CTO. Vishnevskiy explained that the new rewards program is intended to double down on that revenue stream by providing more value to users. He noted that while the program serves as a thank you to subscribers, from a business perspective, it could help improve value for subscribers and therefore retain them. Discord plans to partner with more companies for similar offers over time.
As the platform expands its offerings, it is also navigating the complexities of managing a massive user base. Discord has grown to over 90 million daily active users, evolving from a niche chat tool for gamers into a broader community hub. However, this growth has brought increased scrutiny. The company is currently preparing to roll out age-verification measures as it faces more lawsuits over children’s online safety.
Why it matters
As Discord matures from a niche chat tool into a broader community hub, it is shifting its business model toward value-added subscription bundles to drive retention, even as it navigates the regulatory complexities of scaling a massive user base.
