Deezer to let users filter out AI-generated music from search
Deezer is building a toggle, due before the end of the year, to filter AI-generated music out of search after AI tracks made up more than 50% of daily uploads in July.
Deezer said Tuesday it is working on a new toggle that lets users filter AI-generated music out of their experience on the platform, with the feature expected to launch before the end of the year. Turning it on will stop AI-generated tracks, albums, and related artists from appearing in search results. “We’ve seen clear user demand for the ability to filter out AI-generated music, and we are now giving everyone the option to remove this content completely from their streaming experience on Deezer, and focus only on human creators and creations, if they wish,” CEO Alexis Lanternier said, adding that the growth of AI music on the platform was one of the catalysts for the toggle.
Deezer cited a survey from last year that found around 45% of its customers wanted a way to remove AI music from their feeds. The company added AI-detection tooling last year and has tracked upload volumes since: AI-generated tracks made up 10% of daily uploads at that time, but by July the company said more than 50% of daily uploads — an average of 90,000 tracks per day — were AI-generated.
Other streaming services have taken their own approaches to AI music. Bandcamp has completely banned AI tracks, while Tidal cut off monetization for people who upload AI music. Spotify has taken a lighter touch, tagging AI tracks and artists more prominently rather than removing or blocking them. In August, Variety reported that Apple Music was looking to label AI tracks by the end of the year. Beyond platform-level tagging, users are also turning to independent tracking systems to identify AI-generated music themselves.
Why it matters
Deezer’s jump from 10% to more than half of daily uploads being AI-generated in roughly a year shows how fast synthetic content is saturating music platforms, forcing streaming services to pick between banning, demonetizing, tagging, or letting listeners filter it themselves.
