OpenAI targets Anthropic with new $100/month ChatGPT plan
OpenAI launched a $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier to increase Codex coding capacity and compete with Anthropic’s Claude, though higher usage limits are likely temporary.
On Thursday, OpenAI announced a new $100/month Pro plan for ChatGPT. The launch is a move designed to challenge competitor Anthropic and its AI model, Claude, by offering increased capacity for Codex, OpenAI’s coding tool.
The new subscription tier sits between the existing lower-cost options and the highest-tier offering. Although OpenAI’s pricing page does not currently list the $200 Pro plan, the company confirmed that this highest tier remains available. The new $100/month plan offers 5x more Codex capacity than the $20/month Plus plan, while the $200 plan provides 20x higher limits than the Plus plan.
To help users navigate the updated options, ChatGPT’s current pricing structure includes:
- Go plan: $8/month (includes ads)
- Plus plan: $20/month (ad-free)
- Pro plan (New): $100/month (ad-free, offering 5x more Codex capacity than Plus)
- Pro plan (Unlisted): $200 (ad-free, offering 20x higher limits than Plus)
According to an OpenAI spokesperson, more than 3 million people globally use Codex every week. The spokesperson stated that weekly Codex usage has grown 5x over the past three months, with usage growing more than 70% month over month. The new $100 tier is positioned to directly compete with Anthropic’s Claude Code. The spokesperson noted: “The new $100 Pro Tier is designed to give developers more practical coding capacity for the money, especially during high-intensity work sessions where limits matter most. Compared with Claude Code, Codex delivers more coding capacity per dollar across paid tiers, with the difference showing up most clearly during active coding use”
However, developers using the new tier should expect these high limits to adjust. OpenAI is offering even higher limits on the $100 plan through May 31, meaning the current capacity levels will likely not last after that date.
Why it matters
OpenAI is aggressively segmenting its pricing to capture power users and developers, directly positioning its coding tool against Anthropic’s offerings to maintain market share. This strategy highlights the intensifying competition in the developer market, where pricing and rate limits are becoming key battlegrounds.
