Ascend Elements files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Ascend Elements has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after facing insurmountable financial challenges, likely compounded by the cancellation of a $316 million government grant.
Ascend Elements has started Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings—the U.S. bankruptcy code for reorganization—marking a heavy blow to investors who had sunk nearly $900 million into the battery recycling company. Linh Austin, the CEO of Ascend Elements, announced the decision in a post on LinkedIn late Thursday night. Austin stated that the company faced “insurmountable” financial challenges, leading to the formal bankruptcy filing in the U.S. on Friday.
The company’s filing was likely compounded by the Trump administration’s decision to cancel a $316 million government grant intended for its manufacturing operations. While $204 million of those grant funds had already been disbursed, the loss of the remaining balance forced Ascend Elements to search for additional capital to make up the shortfall. This cash squeeze coincided with a broader downturn in the U.S. electric vehicle market. Although EV sales surged before tax credits ended in September last year, they have not recovered. Analysts predicted that customers pulled their purchases forward to take advantage of the credit, which failed to assuage automakers’ fears. Consequently, several automakers have dialed back their EV plans; for example, Volkswagen announced it is ending production of its ID.4 electric vehicle at its Chattanooga, Tennessee factory in favor of its gas-powered Atlas model.
Operational hurdles further strained the company’s finances. Ascend Elements had been building a 1 million-square-foot facility in Kentucky, a project that has been “beset by lawsuits and delays.” The startup’s process extracts critical minerals from scrap and end-of-life batteries, which the company says limits the steps needed to transform shredded waste into precursor materials—the materials used to manufacture new cathodes. However, the battery materials market is highly competitive and dominated by overseas competitors that benefit from steady and generous state support, driving down costs. While rival recycling startups like Redwood Materials have generated near-term revenue by pivoting to stationary storage—incorporating battery packs into grid-scale systems to power data centers—Ascend Elements struggled to navigate the capital-intensive landscape.
