European consumers are boycotting American products following U.S. threats regarding Greenland. Specifically, this grassroots boycott is a response to Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland. As a result of these political tensions, two mobile apps designed to identify American products have surged to the top of the Danish App Store. The mobile app NonUSA became the No. 1 app on Wednesday, after jumping from No. 6 on Tuesday. This represents a significant climb from January 9, when the app was ranked No. 441. Meanwhile, Made O’Meter, another mobile app for identifying American products, has reached the No. 5 spot on the App Store.

According to data from Appfigures, a market intelligence provider, the combined average daily downloads for NonUSA on iOS, Made O’Meter on iOS, and Made O’Meter on Google Play increased 867% (or about 9.7x) over the past seven days compared to the week prior. Danish consumers are organizing this boycott of U.S. goods by scanning product barcodes to identify their origin and find local Danish alternatives. The movement has also seen consumers canceling U.S. vacations and ending subscriptions to U.S.-based streaming services, such as Netflix.

While these percentage increases are high, the absolute volume of downloads required to top the charts in Denmark is relatively small compared to the U.S. Appfigures notes that Denmark’s iOS App Store sees around 200,000 downloads per day in total across all apps. Consequently, it could take a few thousand downloads in a single day to reach the top of the Danish App Store. Despite the small market size, the trend is expanding beyond Denmark. The top five markets for NonUSA currently include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, indicating a broader regional alignment. Other apps in the Danish top ten include local travel app Rejsekort, alongside U.S.-based apps like Shop, ChatGPT, and Microsoft Authenticator.

Why it matters

Grassroots consumer movements can rapidly reshape local digital markets, as evidenced by the sudden dominance of niche boycott tools in the Danish App Store.
