Apple announced on Monday that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held from June 8 to June 12. The event will take place online, with physical activities hosted at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. According to the company’s announcement, this year’s conference will focus on AI advancements and updates for its primary software platforms, including iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. The company also plans to introduce new software and developer tools during the event. Apple will stream the conference live on the Apple Developer app, its official website, and the Apple Developer YouTube channel. For developers in China, the conference will be streamed on the Apple Developer Bilibili channel.

The upcoming conference marks a significant shift in direction for the iPhone maker. At last year’s WWDC, Apple focused its presentations on its “Liquid Glass” interface design, leaving artificial intelligence largely unmentioned. This year, however, Apple is expected to launch a new version of Siri, its virtual assistant, equipped with advanced AI capabilities. The conference might showcase this revamped Siri with improved personal context and on-screen awareness. Apple also signed a deal with Google earlier this year to use Google’s Gemini AI model to power AI features on its platform.

In addition to consumer-facing features, the conference is expected to highlight updates for developers. At last year’s event, Apple announced its Foundation Model framework—a type of AI model architecture—which featured AI models designed to work offline. The company may announce new advancements to this framework during the June event. This follows previous efforts to integrate AI into Xcode, Apple’s integrated development environment. After previously bringing models like ChatGPT for coding to Xcode, Apple introduced agentic coding tools—AI tools capable of performing coding tasks autonomously—such as Anthropic’s Claude Agent and OpenAI’s Codex to Xcode earlier this year.

Why it matters

Apple is pivoting its upcoming developer conference to focus on AI advancements, marking a departure from last year’s interface-centric theme. By incorporating partnerships with Google and other AI providers, the company is shifting its software strategy to integrate external models alongside its own offline capabilities.
