Apple rebuilds search foundation to fix Mail and Photos discovery
Apple has rebuilt the search foundation for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, while introducing a new ranking system that should improve email discovery in the Mail app.
On Monday, Apple announced a complete rebuild of the search foundation for its primary operating systems—iOS, iPadOS, and macOS—during the opening keynote of WWDC, Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The overhaul directly addresses long-standing user complaints regarding content discovery across its devices, where users frequently struggle to find files, photos, or messages they know exist.
The search rebuild represents a major effort by Apple to fix core utility features that users rely on daily. For years, users of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS have reported difficulties when trying to locate specific items, such as a travel itinerary in their inbox or a specific image in their photo library. By completely rebuilding the search foundation, Apple is targeting these exact pain points, aiming to deliver a search experience that behaves as expected across its entire ecosystem of devices.
During the event, Stacey Ford, Apple’s vice president of OS Program Management, acknowledged the widespread frustration users experience when attempting to locate files on their devices. “So on iOS, iPadOS and macOS, we’ve rebuilt the foundation of search that powers Spotlight, Photos, and Mail. At its core is the Search Index, a rich catalog your device builds of all your content, so it can understand what you have and where to find it,” Ford said.
According to Ford, Apple re-architected the search system so that it will reindex both new and older content. This means the device will rebuild its catalog from scratch, ensuring that historical data—such as older photos or archived emails—is fully searchable alongside newly created files. This system-wide cataloging is designed to make finding files across different applications more reliable, resolving a common pain point for users who have previously struggled with inconsistent search results on their devices.
The Mail app, in particular, has been a frequent source of user complaints regarding search accuracy. To address this, the application will get a new ranking system. This system should help users surface specific emails more effectively, regardless of when they were sent. The update aims to prevent the system from presenting unrelated messages that do not contain the searched terms, a common issue under the previous search architecture.
Why it matters
This update represents a significant infrastructure change to Apple’s core operating systems, directly targeting persistent user frustration with finding content across their devices. By rebuilding the underlying search index rather than applying surface-level fixes, Apple is attempting to resolve a fundamental usability issue that has long impacted its consumer ecosystem.
