Apple announced on Monday a new subscription option on the App Store that allows customers to pay for auto-renewing subscriptions on a monthly basis while committing to a 12-month plan. This model is designed to allow developers to offer discounted rates to customers in exchange for more predictable long-term revenue. Many developers already market their annual subscriptions by displaying a lower monthly price to highlight the discount a customer receives compared to a standard monthly option. By introducing this feature, Apple is formalizing these existing developer practices, which also allows the company to establish policies regarding how these subscription offers are displayed to avoid misleading customers about the true cost of the deals.

However, the new subscription option will not be available to developers in the United States or Singapore at launch. While Apple did not offer an explanation for this, it’s still in App Store litigation in the U.S. around the specifics of the court’s ruling in its case with Epic Games around how Apple can charge for subscriptions. Apple likely does not want to complicate the litigation matter further until it is finalized.

For customers, the new model could lock them into longer-term plans if they are not vigilant about cancellations. Because these subscriptions auto-renew, a customer could end up agreeing to another 12-month commitment if they forget to cancel before the renewal is due. Customers can cancel at any time, but monthly payments will still be deducted from their Apple account until the 12-month subscription term has ended. Developers can configure this new subscription type in App Store Connect, Apple’s developer portal, and test it in Xcode, Apple’s development environment. The new monthly subscriptions with a 12-month commitment will be available worldwide to customers on iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4, or later. The feature will also be available with the release of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 in May.

Why it matters

This model formalizes common developer practices by allowing discounted rates in exchange for predictable long-term revenue, while Apple simultaneously establishes new display policies to prevent consumer confusion.
