Anthropic’s Claude sees record growth in paid consumer subscriptions
Anthropic’s paid consumer subscriptions have more than doubled this year, with new data showing record growth despite a high-profile feud with the U.S. Department of Defense.
Anthropic is seeing a surge in paid consumer subscriptions for its Claude artificial intelligence platform. According to data from Indagari, a consumer transaction analysis company, Claude is gaining paid subscribers in record numbers. Indagari’s analysis of credit card transactions from about 28 million U.S. consumers indicates a growth trend. While total consumer user estimates for Claude vary, ranging from 18 million to 30 million users, an Anthropic spokesperson confirmed that Claude paid subscriptions have more than doubled this year. The transaction data shows that consumer awareness and product releases began rising in January, and record numbers of users returned to Claude in February.
This growth has persisted despite a public feud between Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). The dispute involves the military’s potential applications of Anthropic’s AI models. Anthropic refused to allow the DOD to use its AI models for “lethal autonomous operations (AI potentially killing people)” or “mass surveillance of American citizens.” This refusal led to the DOD “labeling the company a supply risk.” Following a firm public statement issued by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on February 26, the conflict has intensified, and “Lawsuits are now flying” between the parties.
Consumer interest has been bolstered by effective marketing campaigns, such as Super Bowl advertisements, alongside the rollout of new product features. In January, Anthropic released Claude Code, a developer tool, and Claude Cowork, a productivity tool. The company also introduced Computer Use, an AI feature allowing independent computer navigation, which works with Dispatch, a feature for task assignment. These features are not available to free-tier users, driving more sign-ups. According to Indagari, the majority of these new subscribers are opting for the lowest paid subscription tier:
- The “Pro” tier, which costs $20 per month.
- Higher-cost tiers, which cost $100 or $200 per month.
Why it matters
Anthropic’s consumer popularity is surging despite a high-profile feud with the Department of Defense, driven by new product features and effective marketing campaigns. This growth demonstrates that consumer demand for AI tools can remain resilient even when a company faces severe regulatory and government pressure.
