Anthropic raises $30 billion in Series G funding
Anthropic has raised $30 billion in a Series G round, pushing the AI startup’s valuation to $380 billion as it competes with OpenAI for market dominance.
Anthropic announced on Thursday that it has concluded a $30 billion Series G fundraising round. A Series G round is a late-stage funding round typically used by private companies to scale operations. The new investment brings the artificial-intelligence startup’s valuation to $380 billion, marking an increase from its previous Series F valuation of $183 billion. Details of the funding round were reported earlier this week by Bloomberg before the official announcement was made by the company.
The capital injection was led by Singaporean wealth fund GIC and investment management firm Coatue. A number of other investment firms co-led the round, while several others participated as investors. The list of backers includes:
- GIC, the Singaporean wealth fund (lead investor)
- Coatue, the investment management firm (lead investor)
- D. E. Shaw Ventures (co-lead investor)
- Founders Fund (co-lead investor)
- MGX, an Abu Dhabi investment firm (co-lead investor)
- Accel (investor)
- General Catalyst (investor)
- Jane Street (investor)
- Qatar Investment Authority (investor)
The funding comes as Anthropic experiences demand for Claude, its artificial intelligence product. Krishna Rao, Anthropic’s chief financial officer, emphasized the role of the technology in business operations. “Whether it is entrepreneurs, startups, or the world’s largest enterprises, the message from our customers is the same: Claude is increasingly becoming more critical to how businesses work,” Rao said in a press release. He added that the fundraising reflects the incredible demand the company is seeing from these customers, and explained that Anthropic will use the investment to continue building enterprise-grade products and models—which are software tools built specifically for large-scale business use—that customers have come to depend on.
This capital infusion arrives as Anthropic competes for customers and cultural attention with its competitor, OpenAI. The competition between the two developers is marked by massive funding targets; OpenAI is currently seeking to secure an additional $100 billion in funding. Were OpenAI to secure those funds, its valuation would reach some $830 billion. This potential valuation highlights the scale of the financial resources being poured into the sector as both companies vie for market dominance.
Why it matters
The massive capital injection highlights the escalating arms race between Anthropic and OpenAI, as both companies vie for enterprise customers and cultural dominance in the AI sector.
