Chip cooling startup Frore Systems hits $1.64B valuation
Frore Systems raised $143 million in Series D funding, reaching a $1.64 billion valuation as demand for its liquid-cooling technology grows alongside the AI chip market.
On Monday, the semiconductor cooling startup Frore Systems announced that it has raised $143 million in a Series D funding round. In venture capital, a Series D round represents a late-stage funding round. This latest investment pushes the company’s valuation to $1.64 billion, officially making it a unicorn—a term used to describe a startup valued at over $1 billion. With this latest round, the company has now raised a total of $340 million in funding since its inception.
Frore Systems does not manufacture chips itself; instead, the company produces liquid-cooling systems for them. The company was founded by two former Qualcomm engineers, and its technology was initially created to offer air-cooling systems for phones and other small fanless electronics. However, the company shifted its focus toward chips. This focus was inspired by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Bloomberg reported that Huang received a demo of the technology about two years ago and suggested that Frore Systems develop liquid-cooling options, which have become a must-have for artificial intelligence chips and systems. Following this suggestion, the company developed and released products that work with various Nvidia chips and boards. In addition to its partnership with Nvidia, Frore Systems has also developed products for Qualcomm and AMD.
The funding round arrives during a period of intense investor interest in the AI semiconductor sector, which has produced several new unicorns. Competitors in the field include Positron, an Nvidia competitor that reached a $1 billion valuation in February. Another competitor, Recursive Intelligence, secured a $4 billion valuation right out of the gate. Additionally, a newly launched competitor called Eridu recently entered the market to build AI networking chips, raising a $200 million Series A round, though it declined to disclose its valuation.
The Series D funding round was led by MVP Ventures. Other participating investors in the round include:
- Fidelity
- Mayfield
- Addition
- Qualcomm Ventures
- Alumni Ventures
Why it matters
Frore Systems’ unicorn status underscores the critical role of thermal management in the AI semiconductor supply chain, where cooling technology is becoming as essential as the chips themselves.
