Alphabet-owned Intrinsic, which builds software designed to make industrial robots more accessible, is joining Google. The transition, announced on Wednesday, will bring the robotics software company closer to Google’s AI and cloud infrastructure. While Intrinsic will remain a distinct entity within Google, it will work closely with Google DeepMind and tap into Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud services. Alphabet declined to share information regarding funding or the purchase price for the transition.

Intrinsic originally graduated into an independent company under the Alphabet umbrella in 2021, after spending five years of development within X, Alphabet’s moonshot research division. Other companies that have graduated from X include robotaxi company Waymo and drone delivery company Wing. Following its spinout, Intrinsic expanded its footprint by acquiring Vicarious, a robotics software company, in April 2022. While the purchase price was not disclosed, Vicarious had raised about $250 million from VCs and tech bigwigs. Later that year, Intrinsic also acquired several for-profit divisions of Open Robotics, a nonprofit organization that builds hardware and software platforms for the robotics industry. Despite these acquisitions, Intrinsic laid off 20% of its workforce in January 2023.

Since those layoffs, the company has focused on making robotics more accessible. It released its first product, Flowstate, which is a software platform designed for developing robotics workflows without requiring deep robotics experience. Intrinsic also released its Intrinsic Vision AI model. To scale its technology, Intrinsic announced a joint venture with electronics manufacturer Foxconn in October 2025. The partnership entails the two companies working together on robots to automate factory production, with the goal of full factory automation.

Now, the company is working toward its automation goals through closer collaboration with Google. Wendy Tan White, Intrinsic’s CEO, noted that the integration will help scale these technologies. “Combined with Google’s incredible AI and infrastructure, we’re going to unlock the promise of physical AI for a much broader set of manufacturing businesses and developers. This will fundamentally shift production, from its economics to operations, and enable truly advanced manufacturing,” Tan White stated. Physical AI—which refers to AI models and technology applied to physical robotics and manufacturing—has become a key area of focus, drawing close attention from industry leaders like Nvidia and Qualcomm.

Why it matters

By absorbing Intrinsic, Google is positioning itself to lead the development of physical AI, a sector that industry leaders view as a key step for the advancement of AI models. Integrating Intrinsic’s robotics software with Google’s cloud and Gemini models could accelerate automation in industrial manufacturing, transforming factory floor economics for developers and manufacturers.
